With The Paid Deal You Get: NO MORE TAGS

Have you ever heard a mixtape track with the producer or dj just screaming over the entire track? It’s one of the most annoying things ever. You don’t want your songs or mixtapes to sound annoying, so get rid of those tags with a simple purchase. If you’re someone that seeks free beats, there’s one big downside: tags. For example, I give out my beats for free, but my voice tag will be all over it to prevent stealing and commercial use without permission. Most other producers will do the same thing with their free work. Buying a beat usually means that the producer will remove the voice tags so you can use the beat freely.

NO ROYALTIES TO WORRY ABOUT

Trust me, you don’t want to deal with royalties. Royalty free beats are not only easier to deal with, they’re cheaper in the long run. If you are to deal with royalties, you’ll likely need to go through a music rights organization like ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. Paid membership is required, and they’ll take a cut out of every one of your song sales, ad revenue, and exposure and pay it out to the producer. From the producer’s perspective, this is amazing! But, as an artist, you’ll be losing out on a lot of money in the long haul. How much money will you be losing? Remember the theoretical $8,000 you could make with my $30 lease? Say you reach the max of $8,000 in sales. Do the math, and this is the equivalent of paying me about 0.4% royalties of total sales. Imagine if I asked for 15% royalties instead. That would mean you would owe me $1,200 for the beats. Wouldn’t you prefer paying $30 instead of $1,200?

UNLIMITED BEAT SELECTION

If you were to work face to face with a single, or perhaps a team of producers, you’re limited by their abilities. You may be in a situation where there are no good producers in your city. The easiest and most productive thing to do is head over to the internet and look for beats to buy. In a few clicks, you’ll have thousands of beats at your fingertips, from thousands of different producers. Better yet, you’re accessing a different talent pool which could be a huge upgrade to your sound. For the deeply creative artists who are looking to build projects with a cohesive sound, you might not have access to the right producers. Say you’re looking for boom bap and east coast beats but every producer in your area makes trap beats. You’re only bet is to reach out to producers outside of your network. Hopefully I’m not the first one to tell you this, but the internet is the best place to find the producers and the beats you need.

CUT DOWN ON PRODUCTION TIME AND COST

Have you ever worked one on one with a producer for a whole project? As both a producer, engineer, and former rapper, I can tell you from experience that writing and recording is the fastest part of the song making process. I used to finish writing verses in as quick as 15 minutes, and recording was about the same amount of time. You’re looking at an hour or two for writing and recording, in ideal situations. Some songs take much longer though. Engineering takes quite a bit of time. Weeks, perhaps a month for an entire project. There’s no way around this step, as it’s the most important part of your song for success in my opinion. This step could be quite expensive and time consuming, but you can give things a try yourself for free. Editing rap vocals is fairly easy, see my guide here. We’ll touch more on this in a bit. The actual music production may or may not be the longest step in the whole process. I myself have taken 6+ months to produce tracks for an album. I’ve also had times where I can produce the same amount of tracks in under a month, but quality took a big hit. What if you can cut down on the production time? Shorter production time means you have more time to put out more music, reach more fans, and possibly make more money. So how can you cut down on production time? Go to producers that have premade beats available. Simple enough. Instead of spending countless hours with a producer to get the music right, spend a couple of hours choosing beats. This simple step is how you can cut your time making an album in half. Remember how I mentioned you should treat your artistry like a business? Well, cutting time in half is the same as doubling your revenue.

TRACKOUTS FOR BETTER MIXES

Earlier in this article, I mentioned that engineering and audio quality is the single most important factor in your music’s credibility. Outside of your music, marketing is probably more important, but when specifically talking about the music making process, quality should be the top priority. Quality as in recording, mixing, and mastering engineering. The things that factor into overall quality is actually quite a lot. During the recording stage, you want to have a solid microphone, interface, and a recording environment with good acoustic properties. This is usually taken care of by recording at a studio. Then, we have to worry about the instrumental. This is where mixing (the most important step of the engineering process) starts to fall apart. You need trackouts of instrumentals to achieve the best mixes possible. Trackouts, or stems, give you full control of each element of the instrumental, allowing an engineer to make adjustments as necessary. On top of that, trackouts allow the engineer to find room to fit your vocals in.
